LA4 Data Center Retrofit

Gordon Prill services:  LEED Consulting

Gordon Prill was retained to assist with obtaining a LEED certification rating. We exceeded the client’s expectations and the project was registered for LEED Silver.

The 1-story, tilt-up building was originally built in 2002 and retrofitted in 2009 to house an IBX data center with owner occupied and colo space, and offices located on both floors.

The challenge was to achieve a balance of energy efficiencies while maintaining the functionality of equipment in a world-class data center environment.

  • Capacity – 800 cabinets (will house 3,000 cabinets)
  • Cooling Capacity – 3,000 tons, 4 kW per cabinet, 6.72 MW UPS supportable loads, Cooling Plant – 5 (2+1) 750-ton Water-cooled Centrifugal Chillers; 36 (30+6) 82-ton Chilled Water Air Handling Units
  • Electrical Capacity – 4.0 kVA per cabinet UPS Configuration – 6.72 MW UPS
  •  # of Utility Feeders – 1 - provisioned for 2 # of Power Transformers – 6 (each transformer is rated at 3,000 kVA)

GP services:  Architectural, MEP, Engineering, Construction & LEED consulting

Gordon Prill provided design-build  services and LEED documentation for gold certification for  Phase I of the renovation of a five-story, 585,000 sq. ft. office building constructed in 1983. The project involved phased office design and construction starting with the fifth floor.

  • Most E&A credits were obtained with high efficiency HVAC, lighting and systems controls.
  • New 3,000 ton water cooled chiller plant, boiler plant, air handling units on each floor at all four building corners provides energy savings.
  • We optimized the atrium daylighting concept in the original building by motorizing the daylighting control system at the top of the large central atrium (or " literium ") for additional functionality and energy savings.
